Hondurans eat breakfast between 6:00am and 8:30am, eat their main meal around noon, and eat a lighter meal sometime between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. At finer restaurants a 10 to 15% tip is appropriate, but tips are not always accepted at less formal restaurants. One always says Buen provecho at the table before a meal, and a person approaching or passing the table in a restaurant also says Buen provecho to the people at the table. The most common fruits and vegetables in Honduras are, bananas, pineapples, mangoes, citrus fruits, coconuts, melons, avocados, potatoes, and yams. Staple foods are, red beans, corn, tortillas, and rice. Some special dishes include, tapado (A stew of beef, vegetables, and coconut milk), mondongo (tripe and beef knuckles), nacatamales (pork tamales), and torrejas (which is similar to french toast, and is served at Christmas)Common meals (referred to as plato típical, which means typical dish) include eggs, beans, avocado, meat or chicken, and corn tortillas. During the Summer months, people enjoy topogiyos (frozen fruit juice in plastic bags) and charamuscas. Many people also enjoy soft drinks. Coffee (with, or without milk) is a traditional drink usually served during the main meal of the day. U.S. American fast-food restaurants are found in major cities, and serve pizza, hamburgers, and other dishes.
